Overview

Marine Roam enables you to view and print maps of Marine Themes Vector at one of 13 predefined scales.

Navigating in Marine Roam

You can navigate in Marine Roam by panning (moving the map in any direction) and by zooming in and out of the map.

Searching for a location

You can search for a location in Roam using a place name, postcode, grid reference, easting/northing or latitude/longitude.

Understanding map views

Marine Roam has a number of different pre-defined map scales, called views. The views all display Marine Themes Vector map data. The features displayed at each scale vary - we have selected which features we think are the most appropriate to display for each scale.

 
You can check the Map Content menu to see which features are displayed.

Customise map features

In Marine Roam it is possible to customise which features are displayed on the map.

To customise the map view:

  1. Click Map Content in the left panel.

  2. Map Content contains a list of the marine feature that are included in the map you are currently viewing.

  3. Switch features on and off by checking or un-checking the tick box next to the feature.

  4. Similar marine features are grouped together. Groups of features can be switched on and off by checking or un-checking the tick box next to the group name. Note: De-selecting any feature for display will result in the tick box corresponding to the group of this feature to be un-checked too.

  5. All features can be switched on or off by checking or un-checking the Show/hide all layers tick box.

  6. Select Reset to Basemap button to display all features.


Get information about marine features

  1. After clicking the Get Feature Info buttoninformation button subsequent clicks on the map will open up the Feature Information box.

  2. The Feature Information box will list all marine features located at that point on the map.

  3. Clicking on an entry in the list will display specific information about each marine feature.

Web Map Service

This option, available on a tab in the Overlays menu, allows you to add a web map service of map data and view it, overlaid, on your map. In the sample image below, an elevation map of the UK has been added.

Add a WMS from Digimap’s list

  1. Select Search WMS Feed.

  2. Check the box next to any WMS to select it.

  3. Select Add Selected Layers to map.

  4. Your WMS should be visible in the WMS tab and your map display changed.

 

Add a WMS you have sourced

  1.      In Roam, select Overlays from the sidebar.

  2.   Select the WMS tab.

  3.    Select Manually add WMS Feed

  4.   Paste your link into the first line of the box, titled ‘3rd Party WMS URL’.

  5. NOTE: if your URL has HTTP at the beginning, please change this to HTTPS.

  6. Select Get Layers.

  7. Select the eye icon to turn a layer on or off.

  8. Use the arrows to change the order of display of any layer.

  9. Select the pencil icon to edit the name of any layer.

  10. Select Add Layers to Map.

  11.  Your WMS should be visible in the WMS tab and your map display changed.

WMS settings

1.      You can switch WMS on or off in the WMS tab. Just select the button next to each WMS on or off.

2.      There is an opacity slider under each WMS to let you adjust your map display. Just move it left or right to see more or less of your WMS map data.

 

 


Drawing Tools

The drawing tools in Marine Roam allow you to draw symbols, lines, polygons and text on your maps.

You can add labels to these features and have the ability to select colours and styles for them too.

Below is a summary of the main tools.  

  1. Click Drawing Tools in the sidebar.
  1. Add markers from he Add or change marker section.
  2. Add shapes, lines, text and images from the Draw and Create menu.
  3. Text colour and font size can be set using the Text Settings options.
  4. Area style settings can be set using the Fill and Stroke settings, to select the colour and opacity of the fill and the colour, style and width of the outline.
  5. Line style settings can be set using the Stroke settings.
  6. Use the modify tools to add labels, reposition, resize and reshape features drawn.

  7. To edit the colour and styling of text, line or areas drawn, click on the Select tool (or the drag to select tool) and then click on the feature you want to edit to select it, it will be highlighted.  Next, change the colour and style settings you want to change.  Then deselect the feature(s) by clicking away from the feature in an area where you have no annotations.

  8. You can import a dataset you have and want to add as features to the map using the Import tab.  Supported formats are:

 

  1. To export a set of drawings you have created to a file suitable for use in a GIS, click on the Export tab, choose a file format, give your file a name and click Export.

 


Printing

Marine Roam allows you to create printable maps in A4 to A0 size and in portrait or landscape layout in a variety of formats and at user defined scales.

To create a printable map:

  1. Click the print button print button on the main menu bar.
  2. Enter a map title.
  3. Enter the Scale that you want to print the map at.
  4. Select the print format.
  5. Select the page size using the drop down menu.
  6. Select orientation (landscape or portrait)
  7. Check the box if you want to add National Grid Lines.
  8. Check the box if you want to include any Annotations you have drawn on the map.
  9. Check the box if you want to Add Legend. Note the legend will be created as a separate PDF file and placed in a zip file with your map.
  10. Click Generate Print File, this will produce a PDF file which you can save or print.

 

Preview your map

 

  1. Use the content preview tab to view a small area of the map content that you will get.
  2. Use the layout preview tab to show the extents of the area your map will cover based on the paper size and scale of the map.  
  3. Drag the map in either preview window to change the location of your map.

Map Information

The Map Information tab displays spatial reference information about the current map view.

  1. Click Map Information on the sidebar to open.

  2. Displays the top right and bottom left coordinates of the current map view.

  3. The scale the current map will be printed at by default (this can be changed in the Print menu).

  4. Hover over any point on the map to view the coordinates.

  5.  The information will update as you pan and zoom the map.

My Maps

My Maps enables you to open and save maps you have previously saved.

Save a map

1. To save a map and any annotations you have drawn, open My Maps

2. Select Save map.

3. Give your map a name.

4. Select Save and the map along with any drawings will be saved.  

 

Open a map

To open a saved map select My Maps.

 

  1. Select any map from the list to view in the map window.
  2. Find a saved map by filtering the list.
  3. Click the rubbish bin icon to remove the map from your saved maps.

If you already have drawings present on your map and you try and open another map with drawings, you will be asked to either replace your existing drawings or to merge them.

 

 



Measurement Tools

Marine Roam's Measurement Tools enable you to measure distances and areas on your map.

  1. Select Measurement Tools tab on the left panel.

  2. Select Distance or Area.

  3. Click once on the map to start measuring.  

  4. Move the mouse pointer along to the next point.  Clicking once on the map will add a point.

  5. Double click to finish measuring.  

  6. The total distance or area measurement is displayed in the measurement tools panel.

  7. Measurements can be deleted using the Delete measurements button.
