The exercises on this page require access to ArcGIS or QGIS software for geospatial data analysis. All resources can be downloaded and adapted for use in your own teaching and learning.

Introduction to Visualising data

This exercise is an ideal introduction to using map data in ArcGIS, covering several common tasks, such as data selection and symbolisation.
  
The exercise is in 3 sections.       
Requirements
  • ArcGIS version 10.1 or later

OR

  • QGIS 2.8 or later
  • No GIS experience necessary

Flood analysis

In this exercise you will query vector map data to find out how many buildings are at risk of flooding.

   
Requirements
  • Access to Digimap Ordnance Survey Collection to download data
  • ArcGIS version 10.2 or later
  • No GIS experience necessary

  • Download Ordnance Survey map data from Digimap
  • Add and view raster and vector data to ArcMap
  • Set data frame coordinate system
  • Change map symbols
  • Add buffer zones around rivers
  • Select data using feature attributes and location

Materials

Historic map of Leeds

In this exercise you will download historic maps from Historic Digimap.
   
The historic maps will be added to ArcGIS and overlaid with contemporary map data.
   
Requirements
  • Access to Historic Digimap
  • ArcGIS version 10.1 or later
  • No GIS experience necessary

  • Download historic maps from Historic Digimap

  • Add and view raster historic maps to ArcGIS
  • Add and view vector Ordnance Survey map data
  • Apply a cartographic style to vector map data 
Materials

Newcastle road analysis  

You will import several datasets to ArcGIS. You will style and query postcode boundary and roads data for an area of Newcastle.
  
You will select map features with a simple query.

  • ArcGIS version 10.1 or later
  • No GIS experience necessary

  • Add and view raster and vector data
  • Add group layers to ArcMap
  • Style vector data by applying a layer file and by using attribute data
  • Select map features using a simple query

Wind Farms

The aim of this exercise is to use several map datasets to build up a picture of proposed new wind farm sites in the North West of England.   
  
Requirements
  • Access to Digimap Ordnance Survey Collection
  • ArcGIS version 10.1 or later
  • No GIS experience necessary

Key Learning Objectives
  • Add raster and vector data to ArcMap

  • Amend symbology of map layers

  • Create a buffer zone around a map feature

  • Export map as an image

  • Create a new shapefile of potential locations

  • Carry out viewshed analysis

  • Create a relief map using a Digital Terrain Model

Geology map

The aim of this exercise is to combine geological onshore mapping with Ordnance Survey backdrop mapping.
   
You will apply the British Geological Survey map style to the geological vector mapping.
     
Requirements
  • ArcGIS version 10.1 or later
  • No GIS experience necessary

  • Add raster and vector map data to ArcMap
  • Apply a cartographic style to geological vector map data 
  • Amend the transparency of raster map data
Materials

Forth crossing analysis

You will download and import a range of  marine and Ordnance Survey data to build up a picture of the site for the new Forth Crossing. You will create a cross section to display the water depth profile over the new crossing route.

  • Access to Marine Digimap and Digimap Ordnance Survey
  • ArcGIS version 10.1 or later
  • No GIS experience necessary

Key Learning Objectives

  • Add raster and vector map data to ArcMap

  • Amend symbology of map layers

  • Create a simple query to select map features

  • Join two tiles of raster map data together

  • Create a cross section to analyse water depth

Materials

Shipwreck map

You will download and import marine raster charts and marine shipwreck vector data to ArcGIS.

  
You will style and query shipwreck data and export a selection as a new Shapefile.

  • Access to Marine Digimap
  • ArcGIS version 10.1 or later
  • No GIS experience necessary

  • Download marine map data from Marine Digimap
  • Add raster and vector map data to ArcMap

  • Select data and export selection as a Shapefile

  • Amend the symbol for, and label, a map layer
  • Export your map as an image

The aim of this exercise is to explore sources of marine map data that could be used to analyse the site of a proposed offshore wind farm.

Raster Campus map in ArcGIS

The aim of this exercise is to publish a campus map on a webpage.
   
You will improve the detail of buildings on an existing map in ArcGIS, using a web map stream as a guide.
   
Requirements
  • ArcGIS version 10.1 or later
  • Experience of editing features in ArcGIS

  • Digitise buildings from web map stream
  • Export map as an image

Materials

Vector Campus map in QGIS

The aim of this exercise is to publish a campus map on a webpage.

    
You will create buildings on an existing map in QGIS, using a web map stream as a guide.
    
Requirements
  • QGIS version 2.8 or later

Key Learning Objectives

  • Work with vector data in QGIS
  • Add Digimap web map streaming service to map
  • Digitise buildings from web map stream
  • Export map as vector data
  • Display map in a webpage using OpenLayers
