Large Download Requests Policy

Download limits

In our Data Download applications, we limit the amount of some map data products that can be downloaded in each request.

The limit may be for a set number of National Grid tiles or for an area, e.g. 100km2. The limits vary between map data products. Some map data products do not have a limit.

There is no limit to the number of individual requests for data that a user may submit.

EDINA will contact any user who makes an unusually large number of requests for data to establish:

a) Whether the data are to be used for purposes permitted under the terms of the licence

b) Whether there is an alternative, easier route for obtaining data.

Why are there limits?

Limits are in place to reduce the size of the data file that needs to be downloaded and to manage the processing load on our servers.

Limits help us process your data requests faster.

Large download request

We recognise that larger areas of data may be required for specific projects than can be downloaded with a reasonable number of requests.

If you need a very large area of data, you can submit our Download Request form.

Complete the Download Request Form.

Ask us for advice

Contact us and we can try to:

  1. identify other sources of the same data
  2. suggest alternative data
  3. suggest different ways to request the data through Data Download such as use of national grid tile names

Considerations

Please consider the following:

  1. You must comply with the terms of the licence i.e. only request as much data as you need
  2. You must have the computing capacity available to both load and process potentially very large amounts of data
  3. There may be more appropriate products for your needs
  4. Pre-built datasets may already be available through alternative sources.
