SummaryThis was a third year mapping project aimed to give experience in mapping and writing up a dissertation. The aim was to take an area and map it personally, and then write it up while comparing it to published literature. |
Aims & ObjectivesThe aim of this project was to draw up as comprehensive a report as possible on an area of North Wales. The project used data personally collected in both the field and the lab to record and interpret the units found in the mapping area. This was compared with data collected by other geoscientists. The report utilised as many skills as possible which were learned previously at university. The area that was mapped extends over 4-6 square kilometres. It is made up of varying topography but did not reach the heights of other areas of the Snowdonia National Park. A variety of methods were used which included outcrop mapping, hand specimens in the field, and thin sections in the laboratory. |
MethodologyI went to Capel Curig for five weeks and mapped the area just to the north of the village. I used a compass clinometer for measurements, and took notes, sketches and photos to record what I found and where. Once back at the university I used this data to create stereonets. I looked at the petrography of some of the rocks, then wrote this up. |

Results/OutcomeThe good mark I received from this piece of work enabled me to continue onto the 4th year of the . |
