Tile Size:

MasterMap ITN Layer is not supplied in tiles, it is a continuous dataset that covers the whole of Great Britain. When you select an area of this dataset you will be supplied with the features that lie wholly or partially within that area as follows:

  • Areas below 10,000km2 i.e. 100km x 100km are supplied as a single file.
  • Areas larger than 10,000km2 are supplied in 10,000km2, i.e. 100km x 100km, chunks. Note the chunks are created from the lower left hand corner of the ordered area, so they do not align with the National Grid.
Example Uses:
  • Road network analysis
  • Routing applicaions
  • Scheduling and fleet management
  • Trafic analysis
  • Accessibility studies
  • Network resilience analysis
  • Analyse effects of planned road closures

Overview

OS MasterMap Integrated Transport Network (ITN) Layer consists of a fully topologically structured link-and-node network representing the roads network of Great Britain, from motorways to pedestrianised streets. The network lines follow topographic detail available in OS MasterMap Topography Layer. Information about the factors that may influence a driver’s choice of route is available as an optional Road Routing Information (RRI) theme, extending the functionality of the roads network.

Themes

The ITN data is made up of two themes, the Road Network and the Road Routing Information. The road network includes the following:

  • road classifications
  • road names
  • forms of road
  • motorway junctions
  • information potentially relevant to routing;
  • references to the intersecting polygons from OS MasterMap Topography Layer

Attribution on RRI is divided into three types of category known as qualifiers:

  • Environmental qualifiers provide information on the physical entities on a given part of a network such as a level crossing that a driver may wish to avoid.
  • Vehicular qualifiers provide information on the types of vehicle that may or may not be driven on a given part of the network, such as a stretch of road with access for buses only.
  • Date/time qualifiers provide information on when a driver may wish (or be directed) to use or avoid a given part of the network, such as a seasonal road closure.

A road is defined as a metalled way driveable by an ordinary vehicle such as a family car. Metalling is defined as the systematic application of material to assist the passage of a vehicle. Tracks are not currently included within the ITN Layer. Public and private roads are included in the data, and the accessibility of any road section is indicated in the product’s attribution. Features are provided with attribution that provides additional information to the customer, such as the length of a road section, junction names and the type of road.

Accuracy and resolution

The accuracy of the features in OS MasterMap ITN layer is specified in the attribution of the corresponding features in the OS MasterMap Topography Layer. See the Ordnance Survey User Guide for full details.
