Summary

The project was located in Hayle,Cornwall, and related to the redevelopment of areas of Harvey’s Foundry as a key location within the Mining landscape of Cornwall and West Devon UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Harvey’s Foundry Trust were looking towards a 3rd Phase of development that included an interpretation and visitors centre, artefacts and records archive, Wave Hub research centre, community facilities, and commercial space for income generation. The students were given a brief to record, analyse and design a range of structures and spaces within the site that addressed these needs and worked with the historically important ruins. Digimap was used to help trace the past and present uses of the site and construct a spatial narrative relating to massing and occupation at both a large strategic scale, as well as a more detailed human scale. The students needed to consider new functions and designs to make this a vibrant, interesting and sustainable location whose impact goes beyond the immediate vicinity of the site into the wider community of Hayle.
