50k gazetteer

With over a quarter of a million entries, the 1:50 000 Scale Gazetteer is a comprehensive guide to place names within Great Britain from 'A' Bheinn Bhan' to 'Zulu Fm'. The gazetteer contains all place names that are present on Ordnance Survey's published 1:50 000 scale Landranger^® maps. Each entry is referenced to the National Grid to an accuracy of one kilometre.

For each entry in the 1:50 000 Gazetteer there is a range of additional attribute information present. Covering the type of feature represented by the name; the latitude and longitude; the 1 and 20 km National Grid squares; the county the entry is in; the numbers of the published Landranger mapsheets where the name appears; and the date the entry was added to the gazetteer.

The 1:50 000 Gazetteer is not used to create maps within Digimap, but it can be downloaded as a whole file from Data Download. Alternatively selected records can be downloaded using the Gazetteer Plus application.

Gazetteer Plus allows users to select portions of the gazetteer to download, by geographic area, or by category (for example, all the names in a single county, or all the river names).
