The OS National Geographic Database (NGD) contains authoritative data that describes the geography of Great Britain. It delivers improved data structures, richer attribution, increased currency of data supply and enhanced metadata.
The data is structured into themes. Each theme is made up of one or more collections, which in turn have feature types. A theme is a macro grouping of features which all represent similar geographic entities. Themes are the highest level of grouping within the OS NGD; examples include ‘Buildings’ and ‘Transport’.
The OS National Geographic Database (NGD) offers several benefits to customers:
The eight OS NGD themes included in the Education licence are distributed into 11 Features offered by Digimap:
The OS NGD Building Features Collection provides the most current and comprehensive buildings data for Great Britain.
The OS NGD Water Features Collection provides detailed topographic data on water features in Great Britain, including rivers, lakes, drains, and springs. It includes feature types like Inter Tidal Line and Waterbody Catchment, with full attribution including geometry, classification, and additional details for each feature.
The OS NGD Water Network Collection offers a 3D structured network of watercourses in Great Britain, including rivers, streams, lakes, and canals, represented by network lines. It features three types: Water Link, Water Node, and Water Link Set.
The OS NGD Land Features Collection offers the latest comprehensive land cover data from Ordnance Survey, including manmade features like tennis courts and natural features like cliffs. It excludes buildings, structures, transport, and water features. The collection includes five feature types: Land, Land Point, Landform, Landform Line, and Landform Point.
The OS NGD Land Use Features Collection provides the latest comprehensive data on land use sites and access, captured by Ordnance Survey.
The OS NGD Structure Features Collection provides the latest comprehensive data on manmade structures, excluding buildings. It includes features such as dams, bridges, and statues, with data available in point, line, or polygon geometry.
The OS NGD Named Features Collection offers a comprehensive list of geographic names for features like cities, towns, beaches, and reservoirs, enabling quick gazetteer searches, visualization, and spatial analysis. It includes Named Road Junctions, providing names for intersections and roundabouts.
The OS NGD Routing and Asset Management Information (RAMI) Collection offers detailed routing and asset management data for roads in Great Britain, combining Ordnance Survey’s large-scale data with the National Street Gazetteer. It includes information on routing hazards, vehicle restrictions, and street maintenance responsibilities and conditions with the exclusion of the access to the following feature: Average and Indicative Speed. (Average and Indicative speed data are available from Digimap but at additional cost due to 3rd party licensing conditions.)
The OS NGD Transport Features Collection offers detailed topographic data of Great Britain’s transport environment, including roads, railway lines, tracks, and paths. Each feature is uniquely referenced and includes attributes detailing its lifecycle.
The OS NGD Transport Network Collection provides a detailed topological representation of Great Britain’s road, ferry, rail, and path networks, including road classifications, functions, primary routes, and connectivity. Updates from September 2023 include a rail network with new feature types and pavement information. Starting March 2024, tram track details and a new ‘Tram on road’ feature type will also be included.
The OS NGD Boundaries Collection provides a comprehensive dataset of administrative and electoral boundaries for England, Wales, and Scotland, including Geography Statistical Service (GSS) codes from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and National Records of Scotland (NRS).
